How can acupuncture help someone with cancer?

In the past few years, medical acupuncture has finally been recognized and is being used more and more frequently as part of cancer treatment. Acupuncture is not used to directly treat the disease but instead to help patients to deal with the side effects of the most common cancer treatments, i.e. chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy. These cancer treatments are known to cause tiredness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth ulcers, nerve pain (hand-foot syndrome), hair and nail loss, changes to taste or loss of taste, bone pain and hot flushes. These symptoms prove difficult to contend with and can affect the quality of patients’ day-to-day lives.

Medical acupuncture uses specific points on the body to stimulate the body’s immune system and energy levels, preventing them from weakening during chemotherapy.

In so doing, the body is better equipped to defend itself against cancer and acupuncture also helps reduce the risk of a metastatic relapse.

Medical acupuncture is therefore used to increase the wellbeing of people with cancer. Improving the quality of life of cancer patients is positive for their morale and helps speed up recovery.

    Medical acupuncture offered by COS

The patient is our number one concern at COS. We firmly believe that improving patient wellbeing is vital if they are to cope better with their cancer and carry on with their lives.

This is why we have forged links with the coordinators of the inter-university diploma in scientific acupuncture (Doctors Nadia Volf and Philippe Jeannin), who are both medical acupuncturists, in order to offer this service to the cancer patients being supported by COS.

Scientific acupuncture is taught at the Paris XI Sud School of Medicine in Kremlin Bicêtre. The course is solely for doctors (or future doctors) and teaches them the technique as part of their medical practice (notably cancer treatment) in the space of 12 months.

If you are worried about the side effects of treatment and this is making you anxious, opting for acupuncture is a wise choice as it will help you to get better. If you are unable to travel because of the side effects of cancer treatment, the acupuncturist may be able to visit you at home.

Medical acupuncture is an excellent way of combating tiredness, hot flushes and nausea. COS provides access to acupuncture excellence.
