What is the impact of diet in the development of cancer ?

The incidence of cancer has been rising continuously over the past 25 years. This can be explained by a number of factors. One of these is our day-to-day relationship with food. Studies are conclusive: just like exercise, nutrition plays a pivotal role in the development of cancers.

The French National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS) has issued recommendations aimed at reducing the incidence and development of cancers in the French population. Here are some recommendations to follow in order to maintain the healthiest possible lifestyle:

    • Eat at least 400 grams of fruit and vegetables each day
    • Add portions of pulses and grains to your dishes on a regular basis
    • Avoid alcohol
    • Limit your consumption of red and delicatessen meats, salt and processed foods
    • Do not take food supplements containing beta-carotene
    • Maintain a normal BMI (body mass index) of between 18.5 and 25

Would you like to know more about the incidence of our dietary choices on the development of cancers? The following statistics will help you to see and think more clearly:

    • One glass of alcohol per day increases the risk of developing mouth, larynx and pharynx cancer by 168%.

One 100g portion of red meat per day increases the risk of developing bowel cancer by 29%.

Support from a nutritionist to help you achieve a balanced nutritional intake

On a day-to-day basis, it is sometimes difficult to maintain a healthy balanced diet. Bad habits are easy to form but generally hard to break. Whether you wish to prevent cancer from ever occurring or adopt healthier habits following your diagnosis, COS can support you by putting you in touch at very short notice with a well-known nutritionist, specialized in working with cancer patients.
